It's that time of year again to get out and collect some of the seeds from our local trees. This year is a bumper crop and no doubt you have already been attacked by flying acorns! Now is the time to get out and collect some seeds for propogation. It's not only a lovely walk you will be preserving local trees to restore our local woodlands, increase biodiversity, and strengthen resilience against disease, climate change, and habitat loss.

Tips for Successful Seed Gathering
Here’s a simple guide, drawing on our experience from Battle for Trees’ seed nursery.
| Step | What to Do | Pro Tips |
| 1. Time It Right | Collect during the season when seeds are mature but before too many drop or degrade | For oaks (acorns): late Sep–early Oct; hazel: Sept–Oct; maple “helicopters”: Sept; ash keys: Oct–Nov; birch: late summer to autumn; pine cones: autumn / early winter battlefortrees.com |
| 2. Locate & Identify Trees | Choose healthy trees of native species | Use field guides or apps to confirm species |
| 3. Gather Carefully | Use a cloth bag or basket; pick from ground or gently shake branches | Avoid overharvesting—take only a fraction (e.g. 10-30 %) so wildlife still have seeds |
| 4. Clean & Dry | Remove debris, spread seeds out to dry in a cool, airy place | Let them dry until firm & brittle |
| 5. Store & Label | Put seeds in paper envelopes or breathable containers; label with species & date | Store in a cool, dry place (e.g. fridge) if holding for a while |
| 6. Test Viability | Use float method (for larger seeds) or cut test small ones | Discard seeds that float or show internal damage |
Best Practices & Sustainability
- Take only a share: Wildlife rely on seeds too, so never strip a tree bare.
- Strive for diversity: Gather from multiple trees across an area to maintain genetic variety.
- Work with permission: If on private land or in protected areas, always ask first.
- Record data: Note the location, species, and condition of the parent tree. This info is valuable for planting later.
- Share & learn: Bring seeds to our seed nursery or join our community seed collection days.
