How Can We Plant More Trees?

As a member of Battle for Trees, I often find myself wondering how we can keep adding more trees to our local area. Over time, I’ve learnt that it doesn’t always take big projects sometimes the smallest steps make the biggest difference. Here are a few things I’ve tried, or seen others in our group do, that might work for you too.

Start at Home

I planted a few fruit trees in my back garden a couple of years ago, and it’s been surprisingly easy to look after. Some of our members have added short runs of hedgerow along their fences, which not only look good but also bring more birds and insects into the garden.

If you’ve got a corner or a boundary to spare, why not plant a tree or even a short hedgerow this autumn?

Get Involved in Community Planting Days

One of the best parts of being in Battle for Trees is working alongside other people. Planting makes the work lighter and a bit more enjoyable.

If you’ve never joined a planting day before, give it a go you don’t need any special skills, just outdoor clothes and some enthusiasm.

Think About Hedgerows

I’ve always liked hedgerows, and recently helped plant part of a new one with our group. It struck me how much wildlife depends on them. Even in a garden, a hedgerow can be a practical and wildlife-friendly alternative to a fence and so much more attractive.

If you’re thinking about replacing or adding a boundary, consider a hedgerow.

Pick the Right Trees

I’ve made the mistake of planting trees that didn’t quite suit the soil, and they didn’t last long. These days, I stick to native species like hazel, birch, or hawthorn, which seem to do really well here in Sussex.

Before you plant, do a quick bit of research or ask for advice. You'll save yourself time and effort in the long run.

Care After Planting

The first year is the most important. I make a point of checking new trees regularly, especially in dry spells. A bit of watering and mulching goes a long way especially in the very dry weather we have had this summer.

If you’re planting this year, set yourself a reminder to check on your tree each week at first it makes all the difference.

A Final Thought

Battle for Trees is always welcoming new people on our planting days. It’s a simple way to make a lasting difference, and you’ll learn a lot along the way.
