Growing Roots: Our Community Tree Nursery & Hedgerow Project
Battle for Trees

At Battle for Trees, we believe that big change starts with small, local actions and this summer, we’re thrilled to share the next chapter in our mission: the launch of our Community Tree Nursery and our next big planting effort: a beautiful, wildlife friendly hedgerow!

We've potted lots of trees for local planting too.

Why a Community Tree Nursery?

Trees are at the heart of everything we do, not just for their beauty, but for their power to clean our air, cool our towns, support wildlife, and bring people together. But instead of buying imported saplings with unknown origins, we wanted to do something more local, sustainable, and community-powered.

So, we have created a tree nursery, grown from seeds collected in our own local woods, hedgerows, and gardens. This means stronger trees, better suited to our soil and climate and a whole community learning, growing, and sharing in the process.

Who’s Involved?

The response so far has been amazing! We’ve had help from:

  • Local volunteers of all ages, from teens to retirees
  • A nearby special needs school has helped up plant saplings
  • Families coming on weekends to lend a hand (and sometimes bring cake!)
  • Nature lovers, gardeners, and people who just want to give back

And there’s room for YOU too. Whether you’ve got five minutes or five hours a week, we’d love you to join us.

Our Next Hedgerow Planting Coming Soon!

We’re especially excited to be planning our second hedgerow planting in early winter! This native hedgerow will:

  • Create habitat for birds, bees, and hedgehogs
  • Provide future seed sources for the nursery
  • Act as a living boundary and wildlife corridor
  • Help with carbon storage and local cooling

We’ll be planting species like oak, hawthorn, hazel, field maple, and dog rose all grown right here in our nursery.

Volunteer planting days will be announced soon bring gloves, a flask, and your best muddy boots!

 What’s the Nursery Like?

Here’s a peek at our site layout (below). It includes:

  • Raised tree beds
  • Tool storage shed and water tanks
  • A compost area (we love leaf mould!)
  • An accessible volunteer welcome space
  • Seating under the trees for tea breaks and chat

We’ve designed it to be low-impact, inclusive, and wildlife-friendly place to grow trees and friendships.

 How You Can Help

There are so many ways to get involved:
